“How do you handle all of this?” I asked someone this summer. “I cry myself to sleep at night” was the response. It was meant to be on the humorous side – but I believe that instant responses emerge from truth lying dormant in our subconscious. I pondered over our conversation for a long time because I felt the denial of pain. I know what it is like to cry myself to sleep at night. I cried when my dad was diagnosed with Lou Gherig’s disease; when my son moved out; when my husband died; when a girlfriend betrayed me; when I felt overwhelmed at work.
That kind of pain causes us to curl back into a fetal position. A place where we want to re-create the safe, comforting conditions of the womb. A place of darkness, safety, no noise, secure, tucked in – being taken care of. We crave hope and comfort when we go through struggles in our life. We were never meant to walk this road alone – we are created for relationship – connecting to God and one another.
There are many people crying these days. Broken marriages, hunger, hurricanes, cancer and the everyday feeling of the sameness of life or being overwhelmed. The bible says that the church is the hope of the world. As Prayer Director for Women’s Ministries’ Evening Edition at Trinity Baptist Church – I want to invite you to a place of hope, comfort and safety. But, we need to know who you are – your struggles so that we can find ways to help you and pray for you. In Women’s Ministries we say that “We belong to Christ and one another…no matter what!” That is a bold statement as we step out in faith to help you find a place to belong.
No one should cry themselves to sleep at night without knowing there is a place of hope they can run to. Let us know who you are! The bible says, “And one standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer; three is even better, for a triple braided cord is not easily broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:11 TLB). The one is you, the two is that woman waiting for you at Morning or Evening Edition, and the third person is the Holy Spirit who brings the power of hope through prayer.
